Sankar Pal

Sankar Kumar Pal was born in 1950 and served as the Director of the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata. Fuzzy sets and uncertainty analysis, artificial neural networks for machine intelligence, pattern recognition, image processing, data mining, genetic algorithms, rough sets, and soft computing are among his research interests. In 1993, he established the Machine Intelligence Unit at the ISI, and in 2004, he established the Center for Soft Computing Research: A National Facility at the ISI. He founded the Indian National Academy of Engineering’s Kolkata Chapter. He was a 1990 laureate of the S.S. Bhatnagar Prize. On 5 April 2013, President of India Pranab Mukherjee bestowed upon him the Padma Shri in Science and Engineering in appreciation of his achievements in machine intelligence.
